Schlenkerla Lent Beer, AKA Festenbier.
We have been lucky enough to get our hands on a keg of this super rare Aecht Rauchbier from Bamberg in Germany.
This 5.9% beer is flavoured with Spalt and Hallertau hops. The grist is a lighter blend of both pale, unsmoked malt, and Schlenkerla`s famous beech smoked malt, producing a lighter, softer flavour. The finished beer is then lagered for two months.
This `Lent Bier` is only on sale from Ash Wednesday until Easter. Because of the nutritional quality of the brewers yeast, It is described as having the "Brotzeit, already included. The Brotzeit, is an afternoon snack.
According to the principal established by Monks in the middle ages, "liquida non frangunt ieiunium" (Liquids do not break the fast.) and so stronger, more sustaining beer was brewed to assist in the daily labours.
I would be amazed if this fantastic beer lasts for very long, so get it while you can!
Cheers Chums! And have a Happy Easter!
