Sometimes it feels as though I have been drinking beers from Sierra Nevada brewery all my life, and even though this is not entirely true, their beers have featured in my daily routine (on & off!) for at least a quarter of a century.

London`s Borough Market, and The Rake,

In 2000, I found myself managing Utobeer`s beer cage in London`s Borough market. Sierra Nevada`s range of beers already featured heavily in one of London`s very first bottle shops, and I would often crack open a cold one while I cashed up at the end of the day. After nine long hours of talking about beer to the general public, that first cold beer at the close of day was as welcome as it was needed.

In 2006, Utobeer extended their estate with the addition of The Rake, a tiny micropub situated within the Jubilee market, one of the very first beers to be served on draught was Sierra Nevada`s Pale Ale.

At six O`clock, I would lock the gates of the beer cage, and head over to the Rake, (200 yards away.) as I entered the door, Andrew Carwood, the pub`s manager would pour me two pints of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

That first cool and refreshing half pint would glide down my throat, barely touching the sides. Having thoroughly `primed the pump.` I could then take my time and savour the second half, safe in the knowledge that I had another pint ready and waiting.

Craft beer pioneers!

Before we go any further, we should take a moment to consider, Sierra Nevada brewery`s place in craft beer history. The importance of this brewery cannot be overstated, when Ken Grossman opened his first brewery in Chico Ca in 1980, he was right at the forefront of what would come to be a craft beer revolution.

In addition to producing a fantastic range of superb beers, Sierra Nevada Brewery has taken an admirable approach to the business of brewing and sustainability. This is far too big a topic for me to cover here, and so I recommend that you check out their website. (link below.)

On Friday the 8th of May 2026, Bottle & Board will be launching it`s `SIERRA NEVADA Summertime Showcase." the promotion will feature an ongoing selection of the brewery`s beers, both on tap as well as in cans & bottles.

First up will be California IPA. This golden, session IPA has a piney, citrus flavour at an easy drinking 4.2% abv.
